Why Buy Local Cabinetry and Furniture?

Jotham Anderton • January 14, 2024

Everybody and their uncle has visited those big-brand furniture shops at least once for uni accommodation furniture and meatballs. We all know it for its just-about-good-enough flat-pack materials and lower prices.

But did you know there are plenty of local carpenters and woodworkers near you? And that they could produce something of much higher quality tailored to your needs and wants?

I'm Jotham, owner of Measham-based Feathers & Fern. In this article, I'll explain why I firmly believe using local businesses is better for everybody - especially you, the buyer.

5 Reasons to buy local cabinetry and furniture

Why choose local woodworkers over the big brands?

A local woodworker is part of your community. Whether they live in the same village, town, city, county or even country, they have a 'stake' in the same economy as you. This means the two of you share a vested interest in something, providing the basis for a good working relationship.

But there's far more to it! The following are some of the most significant benefits of local cabinet makers.

1. Bespoke designs

A local business means you can produce something tailored to your needs and space. Your ideas and creativity shine through and make the item what it is.

For example, say it’s time for an upgrade to your kitchen table. What space do you have available? What materials and finishes should be used? Should the table be collapsible or expandable? Can your wedding date and initials be etched into the centre? Where could you put a slide-away panel to access your secret compartment? And so the excitement and dreaming continues and comes together.

There’s nothing like walking guests through the production process of anything you’ve had custom-built for you.

2. One-on-one relationship and journey

Developing your vision into reality alongside a woodworker means you can be part of the journey. Your thoughts, comments, praise and critiques form part - most, even - of the finished piece.

When working with a local carpenter, you'll develop a one-on-one relationship. I love this aspect, as it allows me to get to know you and understand your dreams. As a result, you'll be able to get updates on the item's progress and perhaps even visit it while it's being put together!

3. Quality and durability

A local woodworker spends time on one piece, ensuring it's perfect. It’s their job to realise your ambitions and objectives, making you their absolute focus. The inevitable result is superior quality and excellent craftsmanship.

I naturally link durability with quality. Better-made items last longer, so you should expect bespoke local work to last generations.

4. Functional with emotional attachment

If you ever remember a store-bought item or piece of furniture for where it came from, it'll be something about how difficult it was to move or assemble. Otherwise, it's just a generic... thing. But having something built specifically for you and your space (or someone else's) gives the item meaning. You could say its emotional value is infinitely higher.

5. Environmental considerations

With careful design approaches and material sourcing techniques, a local woodworker has the lowest possible environmental impact.

You’ll find the following:

  • Much less waste from off-cuts
  • Simpler transportation (material delivery and finished product shipping)
  • Long-lasting, high-quality furniture ‘traps’ carbon, removing it from the atmosphere
  • Wood can be reclaimed from other furniture to save costs and trees
